Computing
Welcome to our computing page, including computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Mrs Ediker and Miss Nicholson are our Computing leaders.
Intent
At St Theresa’s, our computing curriculum is designed in line with the aims of the National Curriculum, preparing pupils for life in an ever-changing digital world. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to use technology confidently, safely and responsibly. Our curriculum is built around three key areas: computing systems and networks, creating media, and programming. Through these, pupils develop the skills to understand how technology works, think logically and express themselves creatively. We place a strong emphasis on online safety, ensuring children know how to stay safe and behave responsibly when using digital technologies. Each year group builds on the skills taught during the previous year, to ensure that by year 6 our children are confident using technology. We also aim for computing to enhance learning across the wider curriculum, supporting creativity, engagement and accessibility for all pupils, and providing a strong foundation for future education and life beyond primary school.
Implementation
Our computing curriculum is delivered using the Teach Computing programme, which provides a clear and progressive sequence of lessons across each year group. Knowledge and skills are built systematically, ensuring pupils revisit and deepen their understanding over time.
Lessons are practical and engaging, allowing children to develop their skills through hands-on experiences in programming, digital media and data handling. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught, and pupils are given regular opportunities to apply their learning across different contexts, including other areas of the curriculum. Online safety is embedded throughout all units and revisited regularly, ensuring pupils develop a secure understanding of how to use technology safely and responsibly. Assessment is ongoing and used to inform teaching, ensuring that all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately.
Impact
By the time pupils leave St Theresa’s, they will be confident, competent and responsible users of technology. They will understand key computing concepts and be able to apply their knowledge to solve problems, create digital content and communicate effectively.
Pupils will demonstrate a strong awareness of online safety, knowing how to keep themselves safe and make responsible choices in a digital environment. They will leave primary school well prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with the essential skills needed to navigate and contribute positively to the digital world.
